About this service
Bathroom waterproofing is done before the floor and lower walls are tiled. We apply a polymer-modified cementitious membrane in two coats with a fibre mesh at corners and around drains, run the membrane up the wall to at least 300 mm, and water-pond the slab for 48 hours before signing off. This is the work that stops leaks reaching the flat below — once tile is down, fixing a missed waterproofing layer means breaking the floor again.
Common symptoms we see
- New bathroom build needs the slab waterproofed
- Existing bathroom leaking to flat below
- Renovation underway — flooring is up
- Persistent damp on the bathroom wall
How we do it
- 1Clean and prime the slab and lower walls
- 2Apply two coats of waterproofing slurry with fibre mesh at corners
- 3Pond-test for 48 hours; confirm zero loss
- 4Hand over for tile-work to begin
Materials we use
Polymer-modified cement slurry (Dr Fixit, Roff, Sika), fibre mesh, primer, drain-flange seals.
Typical duration
Varies — a single bathroom slab takes a day’s work plus 48 hours of pond test.
Safety & quality
No tile-work over un-tested waterproofing. We document the pond test with timestamped photos.
Frequently asked questions
Can waterproofing be done without removing the existing tile?
Surface waterproofing on top of tile exists but is a stop-gap — proper waterproofing needs the tile up.
How do I know it actually worked?
Pond test — we plug the drain and fill the bathroom floor with 50 mm of water for 48 hours. Zero loss = pass.
How long does waterproofing last?
15+ years for the slurry membrane if the tile above stays intact. The tile-grout is what fails first, not the membrane.
