About this service
UPVC for cold-water supply, drains and soil stacks — the workhorse of residential plumbing. Cold-supply UPVC is solvent-welded; soil and waste UPVC uses rubber-ring (push-fit) joints in larger diameters that handle thermal expansion better. We slope drain runs at 1 in 50 minimum, set vent terminations above the parapet, and seat rubber rings clean of grit so they do not weep. Not for hot water — hot supply runs on CPVC.
Common symptoms we see
- Drain stack noisy or gurgling on flush
- Cold-supply leaks at threaded brass junctions
- New soil stack needed for renovation
- Old PVC drain showing splits at solvent joints
How we do it
- 1Cut to length with deburring
- 2Solvent-weld supply lines; push-fit rubber rings on drains
- 3Slope-check drains every metre with a level
- 4Vent and pressure-test before backfill
Materials we use
UPVC pressure pipe (cold supply), UPVC SWR pipe (110/75/50 mm) for drains, solvent cement, EPDM rubber ring seals.
Typical duration
Varies — a single soil-stack riser is half a day; full drain runs longer.
Safety & quality
Push-fit rubber rings need lubricant (recommended grade only). Soap or oil shortens seal life.
Frequently asked questions
Solvent-weld vs push-fit for drains?
Push-fit (rubber ring) for stacks 75 mm and above — handles thermal movement. Solvent-weld for smaller waste runs and supply.
My drain stack sounds noisy — fix?
Usually missing or undersized vent. We can add a vent above the parapet to break the suction.
Can UPVC handle warm waste from kitchen sink?
Brief warm pulses, yes. Continuous boiling water no — but kitchen sink waste is typically warm enough that UPVC is fine.
